Another one of my all time favourite amps, the copper top VOX AC30. This one is non top boost so 63/64 though Transformer dates are mainly 64.
So this came into us in a a sorry state. It hadn’t been used in many years and had a closed back, one original Blue speaker and as investigations went on it looked like it’d probably had a drop of some kind resulting in a slightly twisted chassis and choke that had a twist and was one of the components that needed to be replaced.
On removing the back panel there was a frame of original Fawn covering so we suspect that the whole cab was once an early 60’s Fawn speaker cab that had been later converted to a combo cabinet and recovered, quite possibly by VOX a long time ago.So all in all it not all bad. A lot of components, caps, choke etc have been replaced but mostly the original Mullard Valves are present and sounding superb.
This really sounds fantastic, it has a slight back ground hum but hay show me a 60 year old worker that doesn’t 😉
It’s cosmetically very good. It has had new repro rear panels made and covered in the correct Tolex. Two handles are repro issues.
I had a spare Alnico Blue from one of my JMI Amps that needed redoing so I had that done and put it in this.
The trem sounds lovely though not much difference between that and the Vib.
The chassis was straightened out along with any other kinks. It’s very clean and has another 50 years in it now which makes me very happy.
It’s priced cheaper than my other stock and original AC30’s but note that still is a 1964 VOX AC30, most have had component changes over the years so it’s no exception in those regards. But here is a cane to pick up a great vintage AC30.
